Not enough people were using it, and most of those who came here did so just to hassle us. Base8 has not fulfilled its mission -- as a widely-used resource to help LGBTs and our allies make informed decisions about where to spend our hard-earned money (and from whom to withhold it) -- and has instead become nothing more than a magnet for those who oppress us.

To make Base8 work, we needed support and solidarty from our own community, and in three years, we didn't get it. We don't know what else we could have done to earn that support (in the early days, we begged every A-List blogger we knew to give us just a perfunctory nod), but in the end, if you're not Joe Jervis or Pam Spaulding, you're invisible -- and, apparently, worthless.

In the meantime, tracking anti-gay donations remains an ongoing project, but Base8 is now offline, probably permanently. It's just not worth dealing with the daily hate mail and threats, especially when the entire project has been soundly rejected by the community it was designed to benefit.

A final summary of groups that donated the most to Proposition 8 and other campaigns in the War on Gays will be published (probably sometime in 2012), something that has never been done with true accuracy.

Hint: One group's donations to Prop H8 alone amounted to much more than the commonly estimated 70%. (You guess which group.)
